In terms of location, Google has published a heatmap showing the spots which receive the most click-throughs on a page. The image below is taken from the Google website, and the darker orange areas represent the most effective areas to place ads on a page, and the lighter areas are the more ineffective places. Of course this isn’t set in stone, but for many websites this should be a useful reference.

As you can see, the most effective place to display an Ad is embedded within the centre of the primary content. Now you have the best location sorted, if you combine this with the most productive size of Ad then you’re all set. For the majority of websites, the most effective format of AdSense advert is the 336 x 280 large rectangle, followed by the 728 x 90 horizontal leaderboard. If you are going to integrate any Ads into your website I suggest you start with a combination of those two. As an example you’ll see the large rectangle Ad at the top of this page, just under the article title. Like everything in life it’s hard to find a universally accepted truth, and there will always be exceptions to the rule, but in general I and many other websites have found these two types of Ad to be the most effective. Your best bet is to simply try different sizes out and see how well they do in terms of CTRs. Create channels for each Ad format so you can track which is your most effective and optimise accordingly.
