April 2007 Next PageRank Update

Webmasters who depend on Google PageRank for determining how much they can charge for people to place a link on their website hold drawn breath this month. With the last major update in Toolbar PageRank (PR) being in January 2007, we are about due the next one - hopefully within three to four weeks. Some commentators are guessing that the update is already underway but in our opinion we still have another few weeks to go. All Google datacentres are still reporting similar PageRank values, suggesting that the update hasn’t yet started.
Over the next few weeks you should look out for your PageRank improving, and your un-PageRanked pages increasing in value. The last update saw a strange feature of newer pages receiving a greater PR value than older pages, despite them not having a greater link volume.
We’ll post again when we start noticing changes in PageRank, until that time, we’ve also published an introductory what is PageRank article.
Make The Most of The PageRank Update
So what should you be doing in advance of the next Google PR Update? If you have any intentions to build your website then I’d make sure all your new pages exist and are spiderable. That way they should gain some PageRank in this update - in the January 2007 update a strange phenomenon occurred whereby newer pages were given higher PageRank than older pages. Secondly you should also ensure you internal linking structure is optimised, linking your pages together in as shallow a structure as possible. The higher a page’s position in your website hierarchy the better - for example if you can access a page by clicking on a link from the home page then this is better in Google’s eyes than having to go through three other pages.
Finally, keep building those quality inbound links to ensure your PageRank increases and doesn’t decrease!
